Education Technician

This position will serve as a work lead to support the education program at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore by facilitating hands-on, curriculum based classroom programs and field trips in the park and at partner agencies, and virtual/distance learning. Field trips and classroom programs occur throughout all seasons of the school year for grades K-12 that directly support the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and the Every Kid Outdoor Initiative. Must be able to carry up to 25 lbs. and work outdoors for long periods of time standing and/or instructing students in various terrain such as sandy or rocky shorelines, steep trails, and snow-covered sites. Outdoor conditions will vary from 0 - 90 F with snow, rain, humidity and biting insects. Driving conditions for off-site programing will require frequent winter travel to schools, partner sites, and libraries on snow-packed roads and parking areas. Helps train seasonal staff, volunteers, interns, and partners to teach established curricula and other standard programs under the direction of the Education Specialist. Assist supervisory staff in scheduling, coaching, and mentoring of program staff. Daily upkeep and maintenance of the Education Shelter is conducted before and after programs which includes but is not limited to, cleaning facility and restrooms, repetitive snow removal, organization of program materials, and conducting safety checks. Other program duties could include assisting with creation of interdisciplinary Great Lakes curriculum correlated to Michigan's Common Core Standards for K-4, planning and designing curriculum-based media materials and publications for schools and partners, presenting pre-school/early childhood programs, assisting with inventorying and organizing education resources, providing support with teacher trainings, grant writing and program evaluation, and assisting in the park's visitor centers as needed. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/30/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40
hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
environmental educator; teacher; naturalist; park guide or tour leader; or similar work requiring skill in working with audiences of diverse backgrounds, ages and group sizes and knowledge of topics related to environmental education, cultural/natural history, biological/physical sciences, natural resources, instruction in curriculum-based residential programs or other disciplines related to resource-based education. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least a bachelor's degree with major study in a related field (at least 24 hours) AND the following Superior Academic Achievement standards:
A standing in the upper third of your graduating class in college, university, or major subdivision, based on completed courses; OR a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B or better) for all courses completed (a) for the full 4-year degree; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B
or better) for all courses completed in a qualifying major field of study as identified above, either; (a) for the full 4-year degree; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum; OR election to membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies (other than freshman societies) which meet the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts and documentation to show how you qualify for Superior Academic Achievement. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level study. One full year of graduate study is considered to be the number determined by your school. If this information is not available, use 18 semester hours for one year. NOTE:
If you are using anything other than 18 semester hours to equal 1 year of graduate education, you MUST submit proof of the number of hours your school has determined to be 1 full year of graduate school. You must also provide transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, 6 months of specialized experience such as described in above, (50% of the required specialized experience) and 9 semester credits of appropriate graduate study (50% of the graduate study as in 'C' above) would be equivalent to 100%. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
